2008 Summer Olympics

I love the Summer Olympics!!!

And I am so glad to be watching them from my relatively pollution-less, air-conditioned home on my widescreen HDTV. I've already cleared my weekend calendar to watch Michael Phelps make history, and to see the Americans sweep up at the Track & Field events. While both Korea and China have done me proud, especially at the agility and strength events, I'm now eager to see the USA own that top podium.

Seeing the Americans dominate at such a wide variety of the events reminds me of what makes this country so great-- opportunity for all. It sounds idealistic and naive, and maybe it is. But when I look at the class of athletes representing the US in the Olympic games, I can't help but be struck by the diversity of talents and backgrounds. We don't just produce the world's best basketball players, or runners, or swimmers...we embrace and nurture some of the best gymnasts, boxers, fencers, cyclists from around the world.

Lastly, I am baffled by my friends and colleagues that profess to love sports but have not tuned into the Olympics this year. While I won't feed into the "greatest athlete of all time" hysteria surrounding Phelps, I do believe we are about to witness an unprecedented display of greatness right before our eyes. If you are doing anything short of seeing your first child being born instead, FOR SHAME!!!

With all due respect to Phelps, note that if he had been two hundrethds of a second slower in that one race, it would not have been an "unprecedented" display of greatness.

Actually, one could argue that even if he lost that 100m, his accomplishments would still be unprecedented b/c of the sheer number of events (and corresponding qualifying and semis) he had to enter in a single games.

Actually the most amazing thing about him IMO is that he correctly self predicted 8 golds. I didn't realize that he only had 8 chances before all this started.

Isn't it odd that Omega is sponsoring Phelps and Omega is also the official time keeper?

Did you hear that Omega isn't releasing the video of the 100m?

Am i too gene-like in my thinking?
